Nautilus, a second interconnection between Belgium and the UK

In the European electricity market context and in order to promote the energy transition and the related challenges, new interconnections are needed. To this end, the need to strengthen the north-south axis and the need to build east-west links have been clearly identified in Europe.

After Nemo Link®, the Nautilus project will be the second interconnection between Belgium and the UK and like the first project; this future interconnection between the two countries is also conducted in partnership between Elia and National Grid Interconnector Holdings Limited (NGIHL).

This second interconnection has three major objectives:

  • Contribute to further price convergence
  • Enhance integration of renewables on a European scale
  • Contribute to sustain more volatile power flows within the European power system

Nautilus is already labelized as a Project of common intrest (PCI) by the European Commision, marking its importance in a European contex project. The timing as well as location, routing, capacity are subject to further studies. In this context, Elia and NGIHL are conducting a bilateral feasibility study and more information will be available in the future development plans.
