Schelle-Malderen-Mechelen

Elia is carrying out work in the area around Mechelen with a view to continuing to guarantee the security of supply in the future. This is the purpose of the Schelle-Malderen-Mechelen project, which comprises four subprojects:

  • The upgrade of three high-voltage substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt
  • The demolition of the existing 70-kV overhead line between Schelle and Mechelen
  • The laying of a new 150-kV cable connection between Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen
  • The demolition of the existing 70-kV overhead line between Malderen and Mechelen

The Schelle-Malderen-Mechelen project comprises four subprojects:

  • The upgrade of three high-voltage substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt

The high-voltage substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt will be upgraded to 150 kV to continue guaranteeing the security of supply in the Mechelen region in the future.

  • The demolition of the existing 70-kV overhead line between Schelle and Mechelen

As this line has come to the end of its service life, it is being demolished. Other lines can take over the transmission of electricity.

  •  The laying of a new 150-kV cable connection between Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen

This new connection is intended to continue guaranteeing the security of supply in the Mechelen region in the future. It is also more efficient, guaranteeing the energy supply in the Mechelen region even after the demolition of the 70-kV overhead line between Schelle and Mechelen.

  •  The demolition of the existing 70-kV overhead line between Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen

This 70-kV connection has come to the end of its service life and is being replaced by the new 150-kV cable connection between Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen.

Elia has devised a schedule for every part of the project. Please find the schedule below .

Upgrade of three 70-kV substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt

The upgrade of the Malderen substation began in spring 2017, while work on the Schelle substation is scheduled for mid-2017. Work on upgrading the substation in Tisselt is currently planned for mid-2018.

Demolition of the 70-kV Schelle-Mechelen overhead line

This work began on 13 February. The 16-km-long line passes through the municipalities of Schelle, Niel, Aartselaar, Rumst and Mechelen. The mast conductors/wires are currently being removed. Once we have received the necessary permits we will begin demolishing the masts. Elia expects demolition to be complete by late 2017.

Laying of the new 150-kV Malderen-Tisselt-Mechelen line

Work on laying the underground cable connection between Mechelen, Tisselt and Malderen is currently scheduled to start in the second half of 2018 and is expected to end in late 2019.

Demolition of the 70-kV Malderen-Mechelen overhead line

The demolition of the 70-kV line between Malderen and Mechelen can begin once the new 150-kV cable connection between the two has been commissioned. A transition substation will be built first. Work is scheduled to begin in spring 2019 and end in autumn that same year. The demolition of the 70-kV line between Mechelen and Malderen will start once the transition substation is complete. Demolition is currently scheduled to begin in early 2020 and end in summer 2020.

Upgrade of three 70-kV substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt

In addition to the high-voltage lines, the substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt also need to be upgraded to guarantee the security of supply in the Mechelen region. Work on the Schelle and Malderen substations has already begun. The upgrade of the substation in Tisselt is scheduled between mid-2018 and mid-2020.

Demolition of the 70-kV Schelle-Mechelen overhead line

The 70-kV line between Schelle and Mechelen has reached the end of its service life. In Elia's vision for the future, energy will be supplied by other lines and cables, meaning that the existing 70-kV line between Mechelen and Schelle will no longer be required. As a result, Elia has begun dismantling it.

This involves demolishing the entire line between Schelle and Mechelen, including the high-voltage line and all bar four masts. These four masts are equipped with antennae and will be upgraded to communication masts to continue guaranteeing good mobile phone reception.

Three masts are located in Schelle: one on Molenstraat (Mertens garage), one on Kerremansstraat (Mermans farm) and one on Rumstsestraat (next to the cemetery). The fourth is situated in front of the De Lijn bus depot in Mechelen.

Laying of the new 150-kV Malderen-Tisselt-Mechelen cable

Elia plans to lay a new 150-kV cable connection between Mechelen, Tisselt and Malderen. This new line will pass through the municipalities of Londerzeel, Willebroek, Puurs, Kapelle-op-den-Bos and Mechelen. Laying a new 150-kV cable will mean that the existing 70-kV overhead lines between Mechelen and Schelle and between Mechelen and Malderen will no longer be required in future to guarantee the region's security of supply. Work is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2018.

Most of the new 150-kV cable runs underground, although it will continue to follow the overhead route between Leest and Mechelen. Elia is building a transition substation in Leest that will connect the underground cable with the overhead line.

Demolition of the 70-kV Malderen-Mechelen overhead line

Elia is also dismantling the 70-kV overhead line between Mechelen and Malderen. This line has come to the end of its service life and therefore needs to be replaced. Energy will instead be supplied by the recently laid 150-kV cable between Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen, meaning that the existing overhead line (which passes through the municipalities of Londerzeel, Willebroek, Kapelle-op-den-Bos and Mechelen) can be demolished. Work is currently scheduled to begin in the second half of 2019. A transition substation will first be built to connect the new 150-kV underground cable with the 150-kV overhead line. Work is expected to start in spring 2019 and will continue until autumn. Elia will then begin demolishing the 70-kV line between Malderen and Mechelen. This work will begin in early 2020 and end in summer that same year.

Elia is working on its connections and substations along several routes. Each of the four subprojects have their own route.

  • Upgrade of three 70-kV substations in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt

This work will take place in Schelle, Malderen and Tisselt.

  • Demolition of the 70-kV Schelle-Mechelen overhead line

This 70-kV line is 16-km long and comprises 82 masts. It passes through the municipalities of Schelle, Niel, Aartselaar, Rumst and Mechelen.

  • Laying of the new 150-kV Malderen-Tisselt-Mechelen line

The underground section of this new line crosses the municipalities of Londerzeel, Willebroek, Puurs, Kapelle-op-den-Bos and Mechelen.

Most of the new 150-kV cable runs underground, although it will continue to follow the overhead route between Leest and Mechelen. Elia is building a transition substation in Leest that will connect the underground cable with the overhead line.

  • Demolition of the 70-kV Malderen-Mechelen overhead line

This line also passes through Londerzeel, Willebroek, Puurs, Kapelle-op-den-Bos and Mechelen.
