Pond working group spots record number of northern crested newts at Mercator high-voltage substation
On Wednesday, 24 May, the Kruibeke pond working group counted the newt population in the ponds at the Mercator high-voltage substation owned by system operator Elia.
These ponds were established together with Elia and Regionaal Landschap Schelde-Durme. Expectations were high and were fully met. A total of three different species of amphibian and many types of aquatic animals were encountered, including the rare northern crested newt, for which this network of ponds was specially created.
