Elia publishes study with electricity scenarios for Belgian energy system towards 2050 and calls for rapid action to ensure a reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity system

With the publication of a new study on the future of the Belgian energy system, Elia is calling for rapid action. In ‘Electricity Scenarios for Belgium towards 2050’ the system operator points out that it is high time to make decisions that will secure the Belgian energy system and our welfare and prosperity.

The rapid and fundamental changes brought about by the energy transition create new needs and requirements and there is the additional challenge of the 2025 nuclear exit required by law. In addition to the many challenges, the system operator also sees industrial opportunities for Belgium as Europe's 'energy roundabout'. According to Elia, not deciding almost automatically means extending the lifetime of up to 4 GW nuclear capacity.
