What are the different work leader profiles?

Elia has identified seven different types of work leader, based on the type of work that the work leader oversees. The information below will help you to determine which certification profile is required for each type of work.

Certification for all HV and LV installation work in HV substations, including ancillary activities such as mounting and dismantling the support frames for the electrical equipment and freshening up the paintwork.

Examples of activities:

  • Installing HV equipment;
  • Wiring LV cabinets;
  • Mounting support frames;
  • ...

Certification for all activities covered by the certificate “Work leader – electrical work in substations”, plus all activities relating to MV and HV cables, including the digging of trenches used solely for laying cables (within or outside of substations).

Examples of activities:

  • Creating junctions;
  • Digging trenches for pulling cables;
  • Installing HV equipment;
  • Wiring LV cabinets;
  • ...

Certification for all civil engineering activities in Elia substations and for the digging of cable trenches. A person holding this certificate may carry out work in LV electrical infrastructures if the infrastructures are directly and solely related to buildings.

Examples of activities:

  • Digging trenches for pulling cables;
  • Installing and connecting an air extraction system in a cellar;
  • Laying foundations;
  • Probing with machines;
  • ...

Certification for all activities on HV overhead power lines, including painting.

Examples of activities:

  • Installing a line;
  • Repairing the structure of a pylon;
  • Replacing insulators;
  • Painting pylons;
  • Installing an intrinsic safety system;
  • ...

Certification for all painting activities in HV substations or on overhead power lines.

Examples of activities:

  • Painting the top or body of a pylon;
  • Painting in an HV substation;
  • ...

Certification for all activities near overhead power lines or on pylons for HV overhead power lines, but only below the safety limit plates.

Examples of activities:

  • Painting the pylon body;
  • Installing an intrinsic safety system in the pylon body;
  • Replacing an angle in the pylon body;
  • Pruning trees or plants near HV lines;
  • ...

Certification for all light activities in Elia substations, where the activities do not require the grid component to be shut off. A ‘light activity’ is an activity that can be carried out with little risk of interaction with the electrical infrastructures, both because of the nature of the activity and because the equipment or machinery used for the activity is small.

Examples of activities:

  • Cleaning substation buildings;
  • Checking electrical infrastructures;
  • Performing gardening work at ground level;
  • Freshening up paintwork on support frames without switching off the relevant components;
  • Carrying out plumbing or lighting work in a substation building;
  • Probing manually;
  • ...
