EIC Codes

An EIC code is needed to exchange data on the energy market. You can apply for your code here or consult the list of codes that have already been allocated.

What is an EIC code?

To ensure efficient electronic exchanges of data on the European energy market, a uniform identification system is required.

To this end, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) has developed a coding scheme called the Energy Identification Coding (EIC) scheme.

The EIC is only a coding scheme and does not grant the right or authorisation to trade energy.

Allocation of an EIC code to a market participant

The allocation process consists of three steps:

  1. submission of the application by the market participant: a market participant applies to the LIO (Local Issuing Office) for a local or international EIC;
  2. validation and allocation: the LIO validates the details of the market participant and allocates the code;
  3. verification and integration: the LIO publishes the allocated EIC code on the relevant page of its website;
  4. if the code is an international EIC code, the CIO (Central Issuing Office) checks the EIC code and incorporates it into the central registry.

The same steps apply when changing an EIC code or having it removed.

Applying for an EIC code

Elia is the issuing office for Belgium and is therefore authorised to issue EIC codes. These codes are unique, so market participants that already have an EIC code do not need to apply to Elia for another one.

If you do not have a code yet, then you can apply for one by completing this form.
