Installation of underground electricity cables on schedule

Elia began the first phase of installing new underground electricity cables (150kV) between the high-voltage substations of Baasrode and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde in mid-March. These underground cables run through the municipalities of Baasrode, Lebbeke and Dendermonde. The work is currently on schedule.

To install the new high-voltage cables, open trenches were first dug in the roadside or verge. Elia was able to pull the cables through these trenches or conduits. The road surface was then restored to its original condition. At busy junctions and access points to businesses, Elia used directional drilling to minimise the impact on traffic.

Working in phases

The first three phases of this project have now been completed. The fourth phase was also recently completed, running via Karel Hofmanstraat to Kruisstraat, and connecting with the N41 main national road via directional drilling. The further route follows the N41, along the Hoogveld industrial park and the railway, to the high-voltage substation in Baasrode. Work is scheduled for completion towards the end of December 2023.
