Work to begin at Josaphat substation in Schaerbeek

In October work will begin to upgrade the facilities in the Josaphat substation in Schaerbeek.

This is part of the series of upgrades that Elia is carrying out in the eastern part of its Brussels network. All of the projects in this part of the capital are focused on replacing end-of-life infrastructure.

The work that will be carried out in this area was approved by both the regional (Brussels Capital Region) and federal (federal government) authorities in Elia's investment plan with a view to ensuring reliable infrastructure and therefore 24/7 security of supply (Investment plans).

Certain parts of the Josaphat substation located in avenue Gustave Latinis in the Schaerbeek district of Brussels are reaching the end of their service life, which means it is critically important to upgrade them so we can continue using this network node to supply the RTBF and VRT. In addition, some facilities no longer comply with current technical standards.

Work on the electrical part of the substation will consist of installing new 36/6 kV transformers and a more modern electrical panelModernising the substation will require updating the building that houses it, but the building will retain its current facade so as to preserve its architectural appearanceThe northeast wall separating Elia's land from the Josaphat wasteland will be raised and will become an integral part of the substation building.

During the work, some of trees adjoining the northeast wall will have to be cut down but this area will then be redeveloped into a biodiversity area. The permits allowing the work to be carried out also require that the space be suitably redeveloped after the work has been completed.

Talks are ongoing between Elia and the authorities with a view to jointly developing an environmental development plan taking into account specific local features and requirements. The environmental development plan will be implemented as soon as the work is completed, i.e. three years from now.
