Laying of underground high-voltage cables begins in Watertorenstraat

On Monday 28 February 2022, Elia will start laying underground electricity cables (150kV) at the Watertorenstraat in Olen. During these works, a changed traffic situation applies. The works expected to take about two months.

Underground high-voltage cables to be laid starting on 28 February

Elia is continuing to lay underground high-voltage cables between Herentals and Geel. This connection is necessary in order to upgrade the electricity grid in your area. On Monday 28 February,  Elia will start work on phase 8. During this phase, Elia will lay the high-voltage cables in Watertorenstraat in Olen.

Modified traffic situations

During the work of phase 8, modified traffic situations apply in a number of places:

Bicycle traffic

• The cycle path along the site zone will remain accessible to cyclists and pedestrians.
  

Car traffic

• The Watertorenstraat between Kerkstraat and Zavelheide is closed to car traffic. 
• Traffic from Herentals towards Olen will follow a diversion via Ringlaan (R15) and Geelseweg (N13) (see diversion with the green sphere). 
• Traffic from Olen to Herentals follows the diversion in the opposite direction via Geelseweg (N13) and Ringlaan (R15) (see diversion with the red sphere).
• Umicore (Olen Factory) will remain accessible via a separate passage through the car park and the Leemanslaan.

Minimising disruption

Elia and the contractor are making every effort to minimise the disruption.

• All homes, businesses and farmland will remain accessible at all times. Owners will be informed of any exceptions to these arrangements. 
• Work will only be carried out during the day, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the latest. 
• Site vehicle traffic in the street will be limited.
