Laying of underground cables: changes to traffic rules on Dendermondsesteenweg in August
We have been laying new 36 kV cables between the Sint-Amandsberg and Flora substations since May. From 4 August, we will be working under Dendermondsesteenweg, which will temporarily become a one-way road from Ghent to Destelbergen. The works will continue until 31 August and are purposely taking place in the summer to minimise disruption.
We are working in the Ghent-East area to prepare the high-voltage grid for the future. As such, we are laying new underground cables (36 kV) between the Sint-Amandsberg (Dendermondsesteenweg) and Flora (Eikenmolenwijk) high-voltage substations. The existing cables are outdated and are therefore being replaced. These works will ensure security of supply in the future.
Expected disruption to traffic
The works will enter a new phase from 4 August 2025, when we will start laying the underground cable on Dendermondsesteenweg. To make sure that we can work safely and efficiently, part of Dendermondsesteenweg will only be open to one-way traffic and a diversion will be in place.
The applicable diversion is as follows :
- Dendermondsesteenweg will be closed between Gentbruggestraat and Galgenberglaan to all motorised traffic heading towards Destelbergen, with the exception of public buses, emergency services and class A mopeds. Where the road has been narrowed, De Lijn and emergency services have priority over other traffic in the direction of Destelbergen.
- Towards Ghent, through traffic will still be possible on Dendermondsesteenweg.
- If you are travelling from Ghent towards Destelbergen, you will need to follow the diversion via Gentbruggestraat, Nijverheidskaai, Paul De Ryckstraat and Galgenberglaan. Galgenberglaan and Paul De Ryckstraat will become one-way roads in the direction of Nijverheidskaai towards Dendermondsesteenweg.
