End of work to dismantle the Eizeringen-Dilbeek high-voltage line in sight

Work to dismantle the overhead electricity line (36 kV) between the high-voltage substations in Eizeringen (Lennik) and Dilbeek is almost complete. We have agreed to leave one of the pylons in place for Agentschap Natuur en Bos to convert into a ‘stork pole’.

Dismantling work

All the overhead electricity cables along an eight-kilometre stretch have been removed and a total of 38 high-voltage pylons have already been dismantled. Work began in March 2025 and was carried out in two phases. The first phase - between the pylon at the intersection of the Bruine-Lieveheerstraat and Kattenstraat in Dilbeek and the pylon at the Eizeringen high-voltage substation - was completed in June 2025. The second phase - from the high-voltage substation in Dilbeek to the pylon at Stationsstraat 178 - took place in October 2025. The three pylons near the railway line (on the Wijngaardstraat, the Kouterstraat, and Plankenveld) were also removed in the second phase, in close collaboration with Infrabel. We carried out the work
with the utmost attention to safety, minimal disruption to local residents, and no disruption to electricity supply
. The two remaining pylons (one at the Dilbeek high-voltage substation and the other at the Eizeringen (Lennik) high-voltage substation) will also be dismantled, without any impact on local residents.

Upgrading the electricity grid in the region

Elia was able to dismantle the high-voltage line between Eizeringen and Dilbeek because the Eizeringen high-voltage substation has been powered by an additional 150-kV line since 2022. The high-voltage line was decommissioned back in 2024 to pave the way for its dismantling one year later.

From electricity pylon to stork pole

A distinctive feature of this project is the fact that one pylon in Wolfsputten will be left in place to serve as a ‘stork pole’. This is part of an initiative with Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos to promote biodiversity in the region.
