Update on work on Léon Bekaertlaan and Venecolaan
Elia will complete the cable work on Léon Bekaertlaan by the end of 2020. As a result, the diversion via Venecolaan, Zuidleiestraat and Durmelaan will no longer be in place from 2021. In 2021, Elia will interconnect the various cables at four sites. Traffic will have to follow local diversions at these locations. Work will come to an end in April 2021.
Laying of underground cables on Léon Bekaertlaan completed in late 2020
Work on laying the underground cables on Léon Bekaertlaan will conclude by the end of 2020. Elia will also restore the surface of Léon Bekaertlaan. This road will reopen to through traffic once this work is complete, meaning that cyclists and other traffic will no longer have to follow the diversion via Venecolaan, Zuidleiestraat and Durmelaan from early 2021 onwards.

Work on connecting underground electricity cables to run until April 2021
2021 will see Elia continue connecting the various cables in connection trenches, which are typically wider and deeper than normal trenches. Elia will connect its cable sections at four sites in the Lakeland industrial zone, namely at the intersection between Nijverheidslaan and Léon Bekaertlaan, at two locations on Venecolaan in the direction of Woestijnepark, and in the cul-de-sac on Venecolaan. Traffic will follow local diversions at these sites while this work is under way. This work is currently scheduled to be complete by April 2021.
