Baasrode - Sint-Gillis -Dendermonde

Dismantling the 70-kV overhead high-voltage line and laying a 150-kV underground electricity cable

Dismantling the overhead air line and laying an underground connection Baasrode – Sint-Gillis bij Dendermonde

With the Baasrode – Sint-Gillis bij Dendermonde project, Elia is upgrading the electricity grid between Baasrode and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde

  • texteBenefits to society

Elia will dismantle an existing 70-kV high-voltage line between the high-voltage substations in Baasrode (Buggenhout) and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde (Dendermonde). The high-voltage line is at the end of its service life and is being taken out of service. The electricity wires will be removed over a length of eight kilometres.

Elia will then start laying the 150-kV underground electricity cables in 2022. These underground electricity cables connect the high-voltage substation in Sint-Gillis bij Dendermonde with the high-voltage substation Baasrode. These works are needed to prepare the region for the energy transition. In this way, Elia can continue to guarantee energy supply in the future.

  • texteThe route

Both the dismantling of the high-voltage line and the laying of the underground electricity cable take place between the ‘Sint-Gillis bij Dendermonde’ and ‘Baasrode’ high-voltage substations. The route runs through the municipalities of Buggenhout, Lebbeke and Dendermonde.  View the interactive map here:

Elia has made clear arrangements to minimise the impact of its work on local residents and the surrounding area. These arrangements will be checked regularly by a site supervisor.

    • Elia will work in phases to limit the duration and scale of the impact on the surrounding area.
    • Site vehicles will use the shortest, safest and most accessible routes.
    • Possible diversions will be discussed with the relevant authorities and announced to local residents in advance.
    • Workers will use wooden frames or cranes when removing the electric wires in order to minimise the impact of the project on the surrounding area and local residents.
    • Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to pass the worksites safely at all times.
    • Once work is complete, the worksites will be restored to their original state.
  • Schedule

The removal of the electricity wires, the dismantling of the high-voltage pylons and the laying of the 150 kV underground cable takes place in three phases:

    • Q1–Q2 2022: Winding and removal of electrical wires, dismantling of high voltage pylons and removal of foundations
    • 2022–2023: Laying of underground electricity cable between Baasrode (Buggenhout) and Sint Gillis-bij-Dendermonde
