Baasrode – Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde

Dismantling the 70-kV overhead high-voltage line and laying a 150-kV underground electricity cable

Dismantling the overhead line and laying an underground connection from Baasrode to Sint-Gillis bij-Dendermonde

With this project, Elia is reinforcing the electricity grid between Baasrode and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde. Now that the demolition works have been completed, the laying of the underground cable (150 kV) between the high-voltage substation in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde and the high-voltage substation of Baasrode will start.

  • texteBenefits to society

    In 2022, Elia dismantled an existing 70-kV high-voltage line between the high-voltage substations in Baasrode (Buggenhout) and Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde (Dendermonde). The high-voltage line had reached the end of its service life and was taken out of service.

    In February 2023, Elia will start the preparatory work for the laying of an underground electricity cable (150 kV). This underground electricity cable will connect the high-voltage substation in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde with the high-voltage substation in Baasrode. These works are needed to prepare the region for the energy transition. In this way, Elia can continue to guarantee energy supply in the future.

  • texteThe route

    Both the dismantling of the high-voltage line and the laying of the underground electricity cable take place between the ‘Sint-Gillis bij Dendermonde’ and ‘Baasrode’ high-voltage substations. The route runs through the municipalities of Buggenhout, Lebbeke and Dendermonde. Under “Schedule”, you can see a detailed map of the laying of the electricity cable and the phasing.

    Elia has made clear arrangements to minimise the impact of its work on local residents and the surrounding area. These arrangements will be checked regularly by a site supervisor.

    • Elia will work in phases to limit the duration and scale of the impact on the surrounding area.
    • Site vehicles will use the shortest, safest and most accessible routes.
    • Possible diversions will be discussed with the relevant authorities and announced to local residents in advance.
    • Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to pass the worksites safely at all times.
    • Once work is complete, the worksites will be restored to their original state.

  • Schedule

    Dismantling of the overhead high voltage line has been completed. Elia is working further on the laying of the underground electricity cable (150 kV). This work is being carried out in 10 sub-phases:

    • In mid-February, Elia will first carry out preparatory work;
    • In mid-March, the first phase of the laying of the underground electricity cable will start. The map below gives an overview of the different phases.
