Next phase begins: first pylon installed in Kallo

On 25 March, Elia installed in Kallo (Beveren) the first high-voltage pylon for the new 380-kV high-voltage Liefkenshoek–Mercator line in Kruibeke. As part of the Brabo III project, this is the first in a long line of 58 new pylons that will prepare the port of Antwerp and Waasland for the energy transition and enable our country to exchange more electricity with the Netherlands.

Work begins on new high-voltage line

Last August, Elia started demolishing the existing 150-kV high-voltage line between Liefkenshoek and the Mercator high-voltage substation in Kruibeke with a view to rebuilding it at the same location as a new, upgraded 380-kV high-voltage line.

This makes the installation of the first pylon in Kallo a milestone for Elia in the final phase of the entire Brabo programme (in Dutch). The 33.5-tonne, 63-metre-high structure is the first in a series of 58 new pylons

The works promise to be even more spectacular. In some places, such as at the Kallo lock, pylons taller than the cathedral in Antwerp will be built after the summer. Elia plans to commission the new high-voltage line in the summer of 2026

The construction of this high-voltage line is important for the further electrification of the port of Antwerp and will enable our country to exchange more electricity with the Netherlands.
