Status of the Massenhoven-Van Eyck project
The first phase of the Massenhoven-Van Eyck project was completed at the end of 2022. The second phase is currently under way and involves strengthening the overhead line between the Massenhoven and Meerhout high-voltage substations. Spectacular images were captured when several pylons were replaced as part of the project.
Types of work
Initially, the overhead line between the Massenhoven and Meerhout high-voltage substations consisted of a 380-kV cable set and a 150-kV cable set. Both are being replaced with new 380-kV HTLS conductors, which will pave the way for higher transport capacity. To be able to guarantee the reliability of the line in the long term, it was decided to replace several strategically-positioned pylons with stronger types of pylons. They will ensure the line is stable in the event of (weather) incidents.
All the new pylons will have been erected by the end of July 2025 and work to secure the electricity cables can start. The aim is for the entire project to have been completed by the beginning of 2026.
Replacement of the pylons resulted in impressive images. While doing foundation work in one place, a pylon was being assembled in another place and electricity cables were being moved in yet another place. Our thanks go out to everyone for this prime example of teamwork!
