Work to replace conductors between Ghent and Kruibeke to begin in September

Elia has replaced the conductors on the section of the Mercator-Horta 380 kV high-voltage line between Zomergem and Ghent. On 3 September, Elia will start replacing the conductors on the section between Ghent and Kruibeke. This work will continue until December. During the winter, it will be temporarily halted when the weather deteriorates. But in April 2019, work will resume until its scheduled completion in July 2019.

New conductors with a higher transmission capacity

Conductors are the cables on high-voltage pylons that transmit electricity. We will be replacing the existing conductors with a new type that can transmit more energy. This upgrade is necessary for connecting renewable energy generated by offshore wind farms to the electricity grid and to improve energy trading with Belgium’s neighbouring countries.
