E34 closed near Melsele during the night of October 8 to 9
We are currently reinforcing the high-voltage line (380kV) between Liefkenshoek and the Mercator high-voltage substation in Kruibeke as part of the Brabo III project. Electricity cables have now been installed across the E34 near the entrance and exit complex in Melsele.
During the night of October 8 to 9, the crane used for this work will be dismantled. For this operation, the motorway will be closed between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM near exit 9 in Melsele.
Construction of the high-voltage line
In August 2023, Elia began dismantling the existing high-voltage line (150kV) between Liefkenshoek and the Mercator substation in Kruibeke to rebuild it on the same route as a new reinforced high-voltage line (380kV). By February 2025, most of the pylons had been erected, and the installation of the electricity cables began.
Recently, cables were installed across the E34 near the Melsele entrance and exit complex, requiring the installation of a safety crane above the motorway, which is now being removed. The entire high-voltage line is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
Traffic disruption
To remove the crane, the motorway will be closed in both directions near the Melsele entrance and exit complex. Local traffic between Kallo and Beveren will also need to take a detour. This will take place during the night from Wednesday, October 8 to Thursday, October 9, between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM. In consultation with the police, the Agency for Roads and Traffic, and the surrounding municipalities, a full closure was chosen to ensure maximum safety. Motorway traffic will be diverted via the entrance and exit ramps. Local traffic will be redirected via the E34 and E17.
