Team braving the heights to pull conductors in Herentals
Elia is currently at work in Herentals within the scope of the reinforcement works on the high-voltage line between the Massenhoven and Van Eyck substations. The old electrical cables there are being replaced with new HTLS conductors. The works involve heavy equipment, like a tower crane and pulling and braking machines, and an experienced team with a head for heights.

Nature conservation work under the Massenhoven-Meerhout-Van Eyck line
Since late last year, Elia has been busy with nature conservation work under the line running between the Massenhoven, Meerhout and Van Eyck high-voltage substations in Kinrooi. We are improving the ecological values of the ecosystems that our high-voltage line passes through by pruning, removing exotic species and logging. The aim is to expand natural areas and promote more diverse fauna and flora.

A 40-metre crane above the railway in Herentals
Elia is currently at work in Herentals within the scope of the reinforcement works on the high voltage line between the substations of Massenhoven in Zandhoven and Van Eyck, on the border of Maaseik and Kinrooi. A large crane is being built near the Albert Canal to protect the railway during the pulling of the new HTLS conductors. The work on this connection is of great importance for the energy transition.

Start of pilot project for nature management under high-voltage line
Elia and social enterprise De Winning are joining forces in a unique pilot project in Hechtel-Eksel. For safety reasons, no high crops or trees may grow under the high-voltage line. Thanks to targeted nature management, the high-voltage line through Bosland can blossom into a highway for biodiversity. -

Change in planning phase 2
Elia is currently carrying out works on the high-voltage line between Massenhoven and Van Eyck in Kinrooi/Maaseik. The planning of the works is changing due to unforeseen circumstances. According to the amended planning, the works are anticipated to end in 2026.

On Thursday 28 April 2022, “electrical installations” students of a secondary school visited the work on the high-voltage line in Kinrooi. The students saw first-hand how the reinforcements are happening near their school.

Helicopter removes marker balls on high-voltage line
As from 7 March 2022, Elia is removing the marker balls on the electricity wires between Zandhoven and Kinrooi. This is being done using a helicopter that will fly along the high-voltage line in the municipalities of Bree, Bocholt, Oudsbergen, Peer and Hechtel-Eksel. Subject to favourable weather conditions, the works will take about 2 weeks.

In early February 2021 Elia launched its project to upgrade the 380-kV high-voltage line between the Massenhoven (Zandhoven) and Van Eyck (Kinrooi and Maaseik) high-voltage substations.

Work on high-voltage line to start in February 2021
Elia will start work on upgrading the Massenhoven-Van Eyck high-voltage line in early February 2021. The high-voltage line will be equipped with a new type of electrical wire. The work will be completed by the end of 2024. Elia is taking various measures to minimise the impact of the work.

Attention for nature when working in Bosland
In early February 2021, Elia will start upgrading the high-voltage line between the 'Massenhoven' and 'Van Eyck' substations in Kinrooi and Maaseik. Near the municipality of Hechtel-Eksel, the line runs through the Bosland nature reserve. The works in this area are done with the necessary attention for nature. The works will be completed by the end of 2020. Once the work has been completed, a nature management plan will ensure that biodiversity is preserved and supported under the high-voltage line.

Submission of environmental permit application for activities involving urban development
On 8 June 2020, Elia submitted an environmental permit application to carry out work on the Massenhoven-Van Eyck high-voltage line. This marks the official start of the procedure to obtain an environmental permit. The procedure will involve a number of steps. -

From 12 November to 17 December inclusive, Elia held 10 information sessions to present the Massenhoven-Van Eyck project to local residents.
